Tour Details & Common Questions
What kind of tours does Signature Black Hills Tours offer?
Signature Black Hills Tours offers private guided tours throughout the Black Hills, including Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, and Badlands National Park. All tours are 100% private and designed for small groups of 2 to 6 guests.
What makes your tours unique?
Every tour is led by a former National Park Ranger who brings the Black Hills to life through vivid storytelling, scenic routes, wildlife encounters, and hidden gems alongside the region’s most iconic sights. Each experience is thoughtfully paced—never rushed—so you can truly take it in and leave with meaningful, lasting memories.
What is the best way to see Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills?
The best way to see Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills is with a private guided tour that connects the region’s highlights into one well-paced day. Signature Black Hills Tours combines scenic drives like Needles Highway with stops at Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park’s Sylvan Lake, and hidden viewpoints most visitors miss.
Why choose a private tour instead of a standard group tour?
Private tours offer flexibility, personal attention, and a more relaxed experience. You explore at your group’s pace, focus on what interests you most, and avoid crowded buses and rigid schedules.

Yes. While each tour follows a thoughtfully designed route through the Black Hills’ most iconic highlights, stops and pacing can be adjusted to match your interests.
Guests often choose to emphasize:
Wildlife viewing
Scenic picnic locations
Photography opportunities

A slower, family-friendly pace
How much walking is involved?
The day is designed with a relaxed, flexible rhythm. Many stops include optional short walks under a half mile on paved paths, boardwalks, or natural terrain. Terrain in national park settings may include uneven or unpaved surfaces and mild elevation changes. Longer hikes — up to approximately 1.5 miles — are available for those interested, but no long or strenuous hikes are required.
Please contact us in advance regarding any mobility considerations so we can plan appropriately.

What to Bring
We recommend comfortable closed-toe walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. Layers work best in the Black Hills, as conditions can change throughout the day. Sunscreen and a camera or phone for photos are also encouraged.
For evening tours, a light jacket or sweatshirt is recommended, as temperatures can cool quickly after sunset.

What should I prioritize if I only have one day in the Black Hills?
If you only have one day, prioritize Mount Rushmore, a scenic drive like Iron Mountain Road or Needles Highway, and time in Custer State Park for wildlife viewing. A private tour helps you connect these highlights into a seamless experience.
Do I need a car to visit the Black Hills?
While you can visit the Black Hills on your own, a vehicle is necessary to access most locations. Signature Black Hills Tours provides private transportation with door-to-door pickup from Rapid City and the central Black Hills, so you can relax and focus on the experience.
Is a private tour of the Black Hills worth it?
Yes—private tours offer a more relaxed, personalized experience compared to standard group tours. You travel at your own pace, avoid crowded buses, and benefit from expert guidance that brings the landscape, history, and wildlife to life.
Will I see bison in Custer State Park?
Bison are commonly seen in Custer State Park, especially along the Wildlife Loop. While wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, most tours encounter bison, along with pronghorn, prairie dogs, and other native species.
What is the best time to visit the Badlands National Park?
The best time to visit Badlands National Park is early morning or late afternoon, when the light enhances the colors and formations. Sunset is especially memorable and offers some of the most dramatic views in the park.
